Your First Tattoo in Reno Nevada: A Beginner's Guide from Evolution Tattoo
By The Evolution Team
Getting your first tattoo is a big moment, and we know it can feel equal parts exciting and nerve-wracking. At Evolution Tattoo, we have been guiding people through their first tattoo since we opened our doors on South Virginia Street in 2006, and we still love being part of that experience. Whether you have had a design in mind for years or you are just starting to explore the idea, this guide covers everything we want every first timer in Reno Nevada to know before they sit down in the chair.
WHY YOUR FIRST TATTOO DESERVES A LITTLE PLANNING
A tattoo is one of the few things you will carry with you for life, so a little preparation goes a long way. Plenty of people walk in on a whim and leave thrilled, but the clients who are happiest years later are usually the ones who thought through the design, placement, and artist ahead of time. Planning does not take the fun out of it. If anything, it makes the experience more relaxed, because you know what to expect when you arrive.
Our team has been voted the best tattoo shop in Reno Nevada year after year, including first place in the Best of RN&R and multiple Best of Reno wins, and a big part of that reputation comes from how we treat people who are new to tattoos. We never want anyone to feel rushed or intimidated. Asking questions is part of the process, and there is no such thing as a silly question when it comes to your first tattoo.
CHOOSING A DESIGN THAT WILL AGE WELL
Most people come to us with a mix of inspiration, such as a saved image, a meaningful symbol, a loved one's name, or simply a feeling they want to capture. All of that is useful. Bring whatever reference material you have, and your artist will help turn it into a custom piece designed around you rather than copied from someone else's arm.
When it comes to a first tattoo, we suggest thinking about how the design will look in ten or twenty years. Skin changes over time, and very tiny details or lettering that is too small can blur as the ink settles. Our artists can tell you whether an idea will hold up at the size you want or whether it needs more room to breathe. Fine line, script and lettering, traditional, black and grey, anime, and full color work each have their own strengths, and we cover all of them at Evolution Tattoo, so you can find the style that fits your idea best.
If you are torn between two ideas, that is completely normal. Many clients start with a smaller, simpler piece and come back later for the one they have been dreaming about. There is no rule that your first tattoo must be your biggest or most meaningful one.
PICKING THE RIGHT PLACEMENT
Placement affects how your tattoo looks, how it feels during the session, and how visible it is day to day. Areas with more cushion, like the outer arm, forearm, calf, or thigh, tend to be more comfortable for a first tattoo. Spots closer to bone, such as the ribs, feet, spine, or inner wrist, usually feel more intense. That does not mean you should avoid them, only that it helps to know what you are signing up for.
Think about your lifestyle, too. Your work environment, the clothes you wear, and how much sun a spot gets during a Reno Nevada summer all play a role. Tattoos exposed to strong high desert sun can fade faster without sunscreen, which is worth considering when you choose where your new art will live.
FINDING THE RIGHT ARTIST
Every artist at Evolution Tattoo brings a different specialty to the shop, from portraits and cover-ups to traditional flash and delicate fine line work. Before you book, we encourage you to browse the portfolios on our Artists page and look for work that matches the style you want. If you are drawn to one artist's linework or color palette, that is a great sign they are the right fit for your first tattoo.
You are always welcome to stop by and talk with an artist in person. A quick conversation can tell you a lot about how someone approaches design and whether you feel comfortable with them. For many people getting inked for the first time in Reno Nevada, that comfort level matters just as much as the artwork itself.
WHAT TO EXPECT ON THE DAY OF YOUR APPOINTMENT
Our studio in the heart of Reno Nevada accepts walk-ins when we have availability, and we also book appointments with the artist of your choice. For larger or more detailed custom work, booking ahead is the best way to secure time with a specific artist.
Before your session, get a good night of sleep, eat a solid meal, and drink plenty of water. Avoid alcohol beforehand, since it can increase bleeding and affect how the ink settles. Wear comfortable clothing that gives easy access to the area being tattooed, and bring a valid photo ID.
Once you arrive, your artist will finalize the design with you, confirm the size and placement, and apply a stencil so you can see exactly how it will sit on your skin. You can request adjustments before any ink goes in. Every station at Evolution Tattoo follows strict health standards, including hospital-grade sterilization and single-use needles, so you can relax knowing your first tattoo is in good hands.
As for the pain, most people describe it as a scratching or stinging sensation that becomes more manageable as the session goes on. If you need a break, just say so. Our artists want you comfortable from start to finish.
AFTERCARE AND HEALING
The session is only half the process. How you care for your tattoo over the next few weeks has a huge impact on how it looks for years to come. Your artist will walk you through aftercare instructions before you leave, and following them closely is the best thing you can do for your new ink.
In general, keep the tattoo clean, apply a thin layer of the recommended ointment or unscented lotion, and resist the urge to pick or scratch as it peels. Skip swimming pools, hot tubs, and trips to Lake Tahoe until it is fully healed, and keep it out of direct sun. The dry climate in Reno Nevada can make healing skin feel extra tight and itchy, so staying hydrated and moisturizing as directed really helps. If anything seems off while your first tattoo heals, give us a call. We are always happy to take a look.
A QUICK NOTE ON BODY PIERCING
Not everyone starts their body art journey with ink. Evolution Tattoo also offers professional body piercing using high-quality jewelry in the same clean, sanitary environment as our tattoo work. If you are curious about a piercing, whether alongside your first tattoo or on its own, we can help you choose the right jewelry and explain what healing will look like.
